Sula Islands, July 17, 2025
The government continues to demonstrate its commitment to providing equitable and high-quality healthcare services, even to remote areas. One concrete manifestation of this commitment is the commencement of construction of the Sanana Regional Hospital in Sula Islands Regency, North Maluku, marked by the laying of the cornerstone by Indonesian Minister of Health Budi Gunadi Sadikin.
In his remarks, the Minister of Health emphasized that the construction of the Fastest Best Results Program (PHTC) Hospital is part of the mandate of Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto to build 66 type C hospitals in remote areas.
"The President has tasked us with ensuring that all Indonesians have access to accessible, high-quality, and affordable healthcare. This hospital is not just a building; it must be capable of treating the five leading causes of death in Indonesia, including stroke, heart disease, cancer, kidney failure, and maternal and infant mortality," said the Minister of Health.
The Minister of Health also stated that the hospital will be equipped with advanced medical equipment, such as CT scans, cath labs, mammograms, chemotherapy equipment, dialysis machines, and a complete suite for maternal and child care. However, he cautioned that sophisticated equipment is meaningless without adequate healthcare personnel.
"We are restructuring specialist education to be hospital-based. Regional governments need to encourage local people to pursue specialist medical education, with scholarships from the central government and guaranteed regional civil servant status upon their return to service," he explained.
In addition to facilities and human resources, the Minister of Health emphasized the importance of hospital governance. He expressed his readiness to assist the local government in improving the professional and transparent management of Sanana Regional Hospital, including through the establishment of a competent supervisory board.
Beyond focusing solely on treatment, the Minister of Health also emphasized the need to shift the focus of health development toward promotive and preventive efforts. He urged local governments to optimize the Free Health Checkup program as part of the national strategy to maintain public health.
North Maluku Deputy Governor Sarbin Sehe welcomed the construction of Sanana Regional Hospital as a crucial part of improving access to and quality of healthcare services in the archipelago. He emphasized the geographic challenges North Maluku faces and the importance of adequate medical facilities to reduce the province's still-high maternal mortality rate.
"We express our gratitude to the Minister for his repeated attention, from Central Halmahera to Taliabu. This is our hope and our commitment to ensuring that development continues to be evenly distributed across North Maluku," he said.
Meanwhile, Sula Islands Regent Fifian Adeningsi Mus stated that the construction of Sanana Regional Hospital is part of the region's development priorities. He hopes the hospital will not only improve healthcare services but also create new jobs and stimulate local economic growth.
"With 13 community health centers (Puskesmas), 21 sub-health centers, and dedicated health workers, the construction of this hospital will complement our regional health system. This is a shared legacy for today's and future generations," said the Regent.
He also said that the Sula Islands Regency had received various supports from the Ministry of Health, including the construction of a Pratama Hospital on Mangoli Island, as well as strengthening primary services through the construction of community health centers, ambulances, and regional health laboratories.
